Alla morte del suo ministro Giulio Mazarino (1602-61), il giovane re Luigi XIV (1638-1715) riceve in eredità i suoi consigli politici che lo premuniranno contro la fronda dell'aristocrazia e un fedele servitore come Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-83) che dirigerà abilmente la sua politica. Prodotto dall'ORTF (la TV pubblica francese), sceneggiato da Philippe Erlanger (con dialoghi di Jean Gruault), è un eccezionale e originale esempio sul modo di far storia al cinema: descritta con puntiglio cronachistico, la storia è rievocata con materialistica concretezza nelle sue radici politiche ed economiche. La descrizione dei meccanismi del potere e delle loro origini è illuminante, finalmente didattica come Rossellini teorizza, a partire dal ricorso allo sfarzoso cerimoniale come funzione del potere politico che impoverisce e strema le velleità di indipendenza dei nobili.

La ragazza, dopo l'ennesimo scontro con la madre, decide di abbandonare la roulotte e riceve ospitalità da Riquet. Il bisogno di trovare un lavoro continua però a tormentarla.
