Two traffic officers on a quiet morning shift try to stop a car for speeding. When the car finally pulls over, the driver gets out and shoots at them, killing one of the officers in cold blood. La marcia dei pinguini segue da vicino il viaggio di una colonia e successivamente una coppia di questi che affronta diverse marce affinché il piccolo possa resistere al freddo e alla fame del periodo dopo la sua nascita. Il film mostra le sofferenze dei pinguini durante la loro riproduzione, partendo dalla marcia che dall'oceano li porterà all'interno della regione ghiacciata. Qui si formeranno le coppie che si riprodurranno e aspetteranno la nascita del loro unico figlio. Alcuni piccoli muoiono dal freddo ed il motivo è perché uno dei pinguini ha sbagliato qualche passo della loro danza facendo così cadere l'uovo nel ghiaccio e facendolo congelare... e allora la madre va a rubare il figlio ad un altro pinguino

Girato tra le montagne della Carnia, dove il regista ha trascorso molto tempo tra il 2015 e il 2016 per seguire e riprendere la vita di alcuni abitanti di quei luoghi, il film può apparentemente sembrare un documentario osservativo sulla vita in montagna e indubbiamente si tratta anche di questo. Ma il microcosmo della Carnia su cui si focalizza il film risulta essere il riflesso di una realtà piú ampia e forse un espediente per parlare della vita dell’uomo, del suo rapporto con gli animali, la natura e soprattutto con il tempo. Come ne ha scritto Franco Piavoli: "un film che essenzialmente si affida alle immagini e al suono, ove appunto anche le parole sono suoni e musica della vita e del tempo che scorre ininterrottamente."
