L'alpinista americano Gary Hemming ha segnato l'era degli anni '60. La storia di questo personaggio "eccezionale" è strettamente legata al salvataggio dei due alpinisti tedeschi sulla parete ovest dei Drus, nel 1966, salvataggio da cui aveva preso l'iniziativa. Mentre i servizi di emergenza ufficiali di EHM cercano di raggiungerli dall'alto, una cordata di pirati composta da Gary Hemming, René Desmaison, Lothar Mauch, Gil Bodin, Mike Brurke, François Guillot, il regista Gérard Bauer si organizza per unirli dal basso e riesce a dopo un feroce combattimento il salvataggio. La stampa approfitta dell'evento ed eleva Gary Hemming al rango di eroe nazionale. Ogni giornale presenta in prima pagina questo omone con un atteggiamento simpatico, vestiti non corrispondenti, un sorriso allegro e lunghi capelli biondi. Da quel momento in poi fu soprannominato: "il beatnik delle vette".
