Lo scrittore James Rankin, in cerca di ispirazione per un nuovo libro, si imbatte nel caso di Edward Styles, detto lo "strangolatore" che venti anni prima era stato condannato a morte e giustiziato per l'omicidio di cinque donne, malgrado si professasse innocente. Nella ricostruzione degli avvenimenti James scopre che il dottor Trevant, colui che aveva eseguito le autopsie delle vittime, era stato a sua volta sospettato, ma poi era scomparso senza lasciare tracce. Rankin trova la tomba di Styles, la apre e dentro vi trova anche il ferro chirurgico con cui erano state uccise le ragazze. La vista dell'oggetto crea un forte turbamento in lui e quando si riprende non ricorda nulla degli avvenimenti del giorno prima. Intanto un'altra ragazza - una ballerina - viene uccisa e anche sua moglie, che lo aveva pregato di desistere nelle sue ricerche, viene assassinata. Rankin comincia a essere assalito da dubbi. Chi è in realtà? E cosa ricorda veramente del suo passato?
