Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to blow up England’s King James I (1566-1625) and the Parliament on November 5, 1605. The plot was organized by Robert Catesby (c.1572-1605) in an effort to end the persecution of Roman Catholics by the English government. Catesby and others hoped to replace the country’s Protestant government with Catholic leadership. Around midnight on November 4, 1605, one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes (1570-1606), was discovered in the cellar of the Parliament building with barrels of gunpowder. Fawkes and other men involved in the plot were tried and executed for treason. Every November 5, the British celebrate Guy Fawkes Day by burning Fawkes in effigy.

Rostropovich Life & Art

Released as a memorial for the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who passed away on 27 April 2007, this DVD contains one bonafide cello concerto, the Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor, and two tone poems with prominent cello parts, Ernest Bloch's Schelomo and Richard Strauss' Don Quixote. Rostropovich mastered the Schumann in several famous recordings. Here, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, he provides a splendid performance. Featuring his trademark powerful technique, smooth legato and crisp vibrato, the Romantic roots of the concerto are never hidden for long, despite the relatively cool playing of the Orchestre National de France.

Con i quattro Marx nelle retrovie (Zeppo nella parte del figlio di Groucho), Huxley vince la finale. Scritto da Bert Kalman, Harry Ruby (anche autore di musiche e canzoni), S.J. Perelman e Will B. Johnstone, è il più surreale, caotico e anarchico film marxiano nella sua satira della cultura universitaria USA. “Di qualsiasi cosa si tratti, io sono contro!” (I'm against it!), canta Groucho in apertura, e tutto il film, giocato sulla corda dell'assurdo, è sulla stessa riga antiautoritaria sino alla strepitosa partita conclusiva.

Ellissen is in love with company heiress Claire, but when he returns from his adventures to save the endangered F.P.1 he finds out that he has lost her to Droste. English version of F.P.1 antwortet nicht with Conrad Veidt replacing Hans Albers as the jaded pilot Ellissen.
