Per un errore del cervello elettronico, incaricato di valutare le prove dei candidati, Cruchot viene promosso e si diverte ad umiliare Gerber; le parti si rovesciano, però, allorché, chiarito lo sbaglio, Gerber viene promosso al posto di Cruchot. Frattanto un pericoloso criminale, fuggito di prigione, avendo un conto personale da regolare con Cruchot, gli tende una trappola, costringendo Josephine a invitarlo in casa sua. Per un equivoco però il piano fallisce ed è lo stesso Cruchot a catturare l'evaso, guadagnandosi così, per meriti speciali, la sospirata promozione e riuscendo nel mentre a sposare la vedova Lefrançois.
