È la drammatica storia vera di un'ebrea russa, Ida Nudel, cui viene negato il permesso di espatriare in Israele, permesso che viene però accordato al suo compagno e alla sorella, i quali credendo che anch'essa parta con loro, si lasciano accompagnare al confine. Ma all'ultimo momento la ragazza si getta dal treno. Arrestata poi nel 1978 durante una manifestazione, viene condannata ai lavori forzati in un campo per soli uomini. Quando ne esce nel 1982, dopo altre drammatiche vicissitudini, il suo grido di libertà viene raccolto da due giornalisti europei in un'intervista clandestina.
