Pilato, per porre fine all'inchiesta, dispone la simulazione del ritrovamento del corpo, però Tauro s'accorge dell'inganno ed afferma che il cadavere non è quello del falegname. Dopo alterne vicende, incontra Maria Maddalena, dedita alla cura di lebbrosi fuori di Gerusalemme, che gli comunica di avere Gesù con sé perché lo serve nei sofferenti. Allora Tauro fugge, circontato dai dubbi e dalle paure, e viene condannato da Pilato a morire da solo nel deserto.
