The Yellow Ticket

"The Yellow Ticket" (aka "The Devil's Pawn") was directed by Vicor Janson and Eugen Illes as a German project shot partially in Warsaw. A story of a Jewish girl forced to hide her identity in order to attend medical school in St. Petersburg, the movie is a melodrama of multiple oppression. Lea, as played by Negri, is at a disadvantage as a woman, an orphan and a Jew -- and yet has immense persistence and an insatiable ambition of becoming a doctor. The film includes more than one plot twist (the final one further complicating the issue of Lea's identity), but it's first and foremost a testimony to a spirit impossible to suppress.

Instead of realizing her ambition, she finds herself being exploited by the filmmakers. On the other hand, Meng and Ning's relationship is gradually faded.

This documentary, winner of three Canadian Gemini Awards, offers an in-depth portrait of the events encompassed by the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979 to 1981, when 52 Americans were held by fundamentalist Iranian students deeply disturbed by the course of American policy in their native land. Attention is given to the American reaction to the crisis, both inside and outside of the country. The focus here is on the conduct of the hostages themselves and how they managed to survive within such a volatile situation.

Chris Sam and his family lead a quiet suburban life in Danbury, Connecticut. Chris works for a septic company and his wife Lisa teaches special ed. They're raising their three children-Maddy, Chris Jr. and Jake-in Chris's childhood home. Outgoing and bright, the Sam kids are the center of their parent's world: Maddy, the oldest, is thriving in her college classes, while Chris Jr. and Jake are both gifted athletes. They are a tight-knit family, well-liked by friends and neighbors, and living the suburban dream.
