Ali insegna, scrive libri e ha una relazione con una ragazza. Sua madre invece non si rassegna alla nuova vita ed è tormentata dal desiderio di tornare al villaggio: prepara ripetitivamente i bagagli per partire, convinta che amici e vicini abbiano già lasciato Istanbul per tornare alle origini, e spesso vaga per la città. Ali cerca di spiegarle che nessuno ha fatto ritorno, si prende cura di lei affettuosamente e fa di tutto per cercare la vecchia canzone tradizionale che lei desidera tanto ma che nessuno sembra conoscere. Quando la sua fidanzata resta incinta, il desiderio di inserirsi e affermarsi nella realtà turca di Ali e il richiamo alle origini rappresentato dal tormento di sua madre sembrano diventare inconciliabili.
