Un padre (Mantegna) scopre che il proprio figlio Josh, di sette anni, ha una predisposizione per il gioco degli scacchi. Decide di fargli prendere lezioni da un ex grande campione (Kinsley) che paragona il talento del bambino a quello del più famoso scacchista americano: Bobby Fisher. Il bambino inizia così la sua carriera. Ma molto presto il padre si rende conto di come questo gioco si possa trasformare in una totalizzante e malsana passione che può isolare dal resto del mondo da chi ne è pervaso. È un grande rischio per il bambino che ormai difficilmente riuscirà a sottrarsi dai meccanismi del successo.

Monsieur Hulot, dopo aver invano tentato di farsi ricevere da uno zelante funzionario, che appare e scompare all'interno di un modernissimo palazzo, visita una piccola mostra campionaria colma di ridicoli oggetti. Incontra, quindi, un ex-commilitone che lo conduce prima a casa propria e, dopo, in un night appena inaugurato dove giunge, contemporaneamente, una comitiva di turiste americane. Nel night accade una serie di piccoli incidenti, accolti da tutti con molta allegria. All'alba, terminata la festa, Hulot ed altri si ritrovano al vicino drugstore per uno spuntino, al termine del quale Hulot regala alla più giovane delle americane un fazzoletto di seta con le più celebri vedute di Parigi.
