Placido Domingo è un Duca strepitoso, per mezzi vocali e travolgente carica vitale; Ileana Cotrubas una Gilda perfetta, fragile e implorante. Di alto livello anche il resto del cast, nel quale spiccano il possente Monterone di John Cheek e l'avvenente Maddalena di Isola Jones. La direzione di James Levine si distingue per un impressionante, serratissimo ritmo drammatico.
