Perseguitato dalle autorità, muore di droga a quarant'anni nel 1966, protestatario fino all'ultimo giorno. Fosse ha dato del noto showman un ritratto a più piani per definire il suo malessere e il suo ruolo di critico del costume. Ottima prova di Hoffman e della Perrine nella parte della moglie. Tratto da un dramma teatrale di Julian Barry.
