Finding the right librettos was not easy, but one month after the end of the First World War, his triptych – the grim tragedy Il tabarro, the lyrical and sensitive Suor Angelica, and the comedy Gianni Schicchi – premiered in New York. Three different eras, three different settings, three different ‘colours’; though for Puccini, it is through the contrasts between them that the unity of the work is revealed. For his second time directing at La Monnaie, Tobias Kratzer preserves the original order of the pieces, while weaving them together to form a narrative whole, like a circle with no end. With a cast of artists from the extended La Monnaie family, Alain Altinoglu is the ideal conductor to meet the daunting challenges posed by this triptych.

Al Festival di Berlino 2002 fu presentata una edizione restaurata (Director's Cut) e allungata di oltre 20´.

Se nel corso dei decenni l’opera di Gioachino Rossini e Giuseppe Verdi è stata ripensata grazie alle edizioni critiche e all’esame delle varianti, i capolavori di Giacomo Puccini sono stati finora presentati in versioni che recavano spesso inconsapevolmente le incrostazioni della tradizione. Di qui l’importanza della proposta: ma questa Tosca inaugurale sarà innanzitutto una festa della musica, grazie anche alle voci superbe di Anna Netrebko, Francesco Meli e Luca Salsi, e del teatro con il ritorno di Davide Livermore, già applauditissimo per Attila il 7 dicembre 2018, che si avvarrà delle scene di Giò Forma.

Cavalleria rusticana

La scena si svolge in un paese siciliano (ispirato a Vizzini) durante il giorno di Pasqua. Ancora a sipario calato, si sente Turiddu, il tenore, cantare una serenata a Lola, sua promessa sposa, che durante il servizio militare di Turiddu ha però sposato Alfio. La scena si riempie di paesani e paesane in festa, giunge anche Santa, detta Santuzza, attuale fidanzata di Turiddu, che decide di non entrare in chiesa sentendosi in grave peccato. Si rivolge allora a mamma Lucia, madre di Turiddu, chiedendole notizie del figlio.

Il fantasma dell'Opera

Christine Daae, all'Opera di Parigi, viene guidata al successo da una voce misteriosa che proviene dalle pareti del suo camerino. La voce appartiene ad un uomo misterioso il cui volto è coperto da una maschera, che invita la donna a lasciare il suo fidanzato e a continuare la carriera da cantante.
