The Blue House

The Blue House, is an artistic and sublimation approach of a migrant who lives in the Jungle of Calais. It is a chronicle of the life of a nomadic artist, constrained to immobility. It is an attempt to leave traces on ports, enclaves, deltas, borders, transformed into places of desolation and detention. A refugee is a person who resists disappearance. Alpha explores the world through his art. It is a journey between two journeys, between two worlds. It is a journey to overcome. It's a journey to end the flight.

Sleeping Sickness

Ebbo and Vera Velten have spent the better part of the past twenty years living in different African countries. Ebbo is the manager of a sleeping sickness programme. His work is fulfilling. Vera, however, feels increasingly lost in Yaounde’s ex-pat community. She can’t bear the separation from her 14-year-old daughter, Helen, who is attending boarding school in Germany. In 1988, Andrew Wight and his team went on to attempt a record cave dive in Pannikin Plains Cave on the Nullarbor Plain, where flash floods turned the expedition into a life-or-death adventure. This was captured on film by his support team, and eventually published as Nullarbor Dreaming. This short film launched his career as an international film-maker and culminated in him becoming James Cameron's right-hand man on many 3D and other film projects. Il cinema ha spesso rivisitato la cronaca accentuando magari i tratti piu' spettacolari della realtà. Gus Van Sant compie un'operazione analoga ma di segno opposto. Dopo Michael Moore anche Van Sant riflette sulla strage compiuta da due studenti nei confronti di compagni e professori nel liceo di Columbine negli Usa. Lo fa con un film di breve durata in cui si affida a una macchina da presa che pedina alcuni dei protagonisti che diverranno vittime o assassini quasi fosse una candid camera. Ne esce un quadro di desolante vuoto esistenziale, un tunnel che non ha una luce sul fondo. Non c'è più neppure la tragedia. La morte per strage si tinge di banale quotidianità.
