By combining documentary material, animation and acting interpretation of the thoughts of our heroes, we get to know lives between disappointment and hope, quite similar to ours.

La storia si svolge a Tokyo nei primi anni '80. Yusaku Godai è un ronin (studente che ha fallito l'esame di ammissione all'università) sta preparandosi per tentare di essere ammesso all'università. Vive in una stanza nella Maison Ikkoku (la casa dell'attimo) una vecchia casa di prima della guerra le cui camere sono affittate a basso prezzo. Il prootagonista è molestato dal terribile trio che abita la casa e che lo disturba con frequenti feste a base di alcolici tenute nella stanza n° 5 di Yusako. La storia inizia con Yusaku che non riuscendo a studiare per il disturbo del terribile trio decide di abbandonare la casa ma in quel momento arriva la nuova amministratrice Kyoko Otonashi, una bella ragazza due anni più grande di Yusaku e per quest'ultimo sarà un colpo di fulmine.

Under the sun, the heavenly beauty of grasslands will soon be covered by the raging dust of mines. Facing the ashes and noises caused by heavy mining , the herdsmen have no choice but to leave as the meadow areas dwindle. In the moonlight, iron mines are brightly lit throughout the night. Workers who operate the drilling machines must stay awake. The fight is tortuous, against the machine and against themselves. Meanwhile, coal miners are busy filling trucks with coals. Wearing a coal-dust mask, they become ghostlike creatures. An endless line of trucks will transport all the coals and iron ores to the iron works. There traps another crowd of souls, being baked in hell. In the hospital, time hangs heavy on miners' hands. After decades of breathing coal dust, death is just around the corner. They are living the reality of purgatory, but there will be no paradise.
