After Hassan discovers Zidik living alone on the streets, he takes him in and cares for him like a son. Hassan often "forgets" that the virus killed his wife, while Zidik still remembers his sister attacking his mother and his father sacrificing himself to save Zidik. He also often thinks of Zooey, the girl he met at the orphanage he briefly stayed at before being kicked out by the evil Kak Lily. Meanwhile, Dr. Rahman, a disgraced scientist who previously managed to contain the virus, manufactures a new strain of zombie virus to create chaos. Amid this new zombie outbreak, Zidik encounters a zombified Zooey who tries to attack him but she slowly begins to remember who he is. Zidik then gets taken prisoner by Dr. Rahman when the doctor discovers that he is immune to the virus.

In un villaggio ucraino, nel giugno 1941, finisce la scuola e alcuni amici decidono di fare una gita a Kiev. Vengono però attaccati da un aereo tedesco, parte della flotta nazista che sta invadendo l’Unione Sovietica. Quando poi tutto il villaggio è invaso dai nazisti e in parte poi dato alle fiamme, molti si rifugiano tra le vicine colline per fare la resistenza. Un dottore usa brutalmente il sangue dei bambini del villaggio per rifornire i soldati feriti con trasfusioni. Alcuni per averne dato troppo, muoiono. Un medico russo, scoperto ciò, informa i partigiani che preparano un attacco a cavallo per salvare i bambini. Il medico russo accusa quello della Wehrmacht di crudeltà e quindi gli spara.

Thomas, insieme al suo cameraman Sebastian Ganz, approfondisce il tema della vita, che si aggrava durante il conflitto, ma finiranno per rimanere intrappolati nel fuoco incrociato, quando un raid aereo colpisce un matrimonio locale.
