Il proprietario di un castello inglese è minacciato da un misterioso mascherato che uccide i suoi nemici strangolandoli. Il castellano chiama Scotland Yard, che arriva velocemente ma non abbastanza. Il castellano muore prima che gli si possa portare aiuto. Ma poi muore anche lo strangolatore.

Assalto al treno

L'ultima scena è la più emblematica del film e mostra il capo dei banditi, che, seduto e inquadrato fino al busto, alza la pistola e la punta contro la macchina da presa (gli spettatori), sparando verso l'obiettivo senza batter ciglio. La scena, che, a discrezione del proiezionista, poteva essere montata anche all'inizio del film (e fu l'unica a essere colorata a mano), aveva un effetto a sorpresa ed era destinata a sorprendere il pubblico. Se montata all'inizio poteva valere come anticipazione dell'azione successiva, se montato alla fine era una sorta di minaccioso avvertimento che il cattivo poteva tornare, soprattutto tenendo conto che gli spettatori ben sapevano che nella realtà il capo dei banditi del vero assalto al treno era ancora libero.

Ventimila sterline per Amanda

Ottimo film, tipicamente britannico, con due eccellenti occasioni interpretative per Attenborough e la Stanley. Lei è una falsa medium che progetta un contorto piano. Convince il marito a rapire una bambina, in modo da poter "vedere" il luogo del nascondiglio, farla ritrovare e acquistare una fama eccezionale (e molto redditizia) come chiaroveggente.
