L'artista alcolizzato che non riesce ad avere il giusto riconoscimento per la sua opera è già di per sé un cliché cinematografico perfetto. È indubbio però che ciò che ha raggiunto Ed Harris dirigendo e interpretando questo film è l'attenzione dello spettatore, e sicuramente molti di quelli che lo hanno visto hanno voluto saperne di più su Jackson Pollock, uno dei più grandi artisti del ventesimo secolo. Ogni singolo gesto che compiva sulla tela aveva sempre un significato per lui e per chi ha la sensibilità di trovarlo. La storia narrata nel film, il rapporto con Lee Krasner, è fedele alla realtà. Il fatto che si stimolavano a vicenda creativamente è forse meno chiaro nel film e l'influenza di Lee è stata fondamentale per Jackson. L'attrice Marcia Gay Harden ha vinto il premio Oscar per il ruolo.

Il 15 aprile 1874 apriva a Parigi la prima mostra impressionista. «Affamati di indipendenza», Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Sisley, Cézanne avevano deciso di trasgredire le regole organizzando la loro mostra, al di fuori dalle vie ufficiali: nasceva così l’impressionismo. Per celebrare questo epocale anniversario, il Museo d’Orsay ha presentato circa 130 opere, volgendo uno sguardo nuovo e attento alla data considerata come anno di nascita delle avanguardie.
