In cella aveva appreso, da uno scienziato divenuto pazzo, la formula per realizzare una sostanza che, ingerita, rimpicciolisce le persone. Travestito da anziana signora, il banchiere apre a Parigi un negozio con i suoi "giocattoli". In realtà si serve di loro, dopo averli ipnotizzati, per vendicarsi di quanti ebbero un ruolo nella sua condanna. Uno di questi in effetti confessa la sua colpa ma, un furioso incendio scoppiato nel negozio distrugge anche il laboratorio, vanificando l'opera vendicativa. Efficacissimo ed ancora valido horror che riesce a unire temi fantastici con quelli scientifici. Browing si conferma maestro del genere, coadiuvato dalla luciferina lucidità di Barrymore.

La terra

Ucraina, nel 1929. Il vecchio Semën muore, mentre i kulaki sono preoccupati per i provvedimenti di collettivizzazione della terra. Al villaggio arriva il primo trattore, che viene subito rimesso in moto con metodi poco ortodossi. La sera i ragazzi e le ragazze si ritrovano tra loro. Il giovane Vasil′, animatore di una nascente cooperativa, ritorna da un appuntamento con la fidanzata danzando di gioia lungo la strada, ma viene ucciso da un colpo di arma da fuoco. L'intero villaggio accompagna il suo feretro nella cerimonia funebre. L'assassino di Vasil′, figlio di un kulak, confessa il proprio crimine alla vista dell'immensa folla riunita, ma nessuno gli presta ascolto. Una pioggia consolatrice bagna i campi e i frutti della terra. I giovani sono nuovamente riuniti.
