Il giglio delle tenebre

Il melodramma di Pabst, tratto da un romanzo di Ilja Erenburg, si muove tra Crimea, Russia e Parigi, e narra dell'amore tra una giovane francese, Jeanne Ney (Edith Jehanne) e il giovane bolscevico Andreas (Uno Henning) durante la guerra civile russa, amore osteggiato dal perfido Khalibiev (Fritz Rasp). Pabst usò perlopiù la luce naturale e ricorse a veri ex ufficiali russi, ma nonostante l'impiego di tecniche realistiche e di una narrazione all'apparenza molto convenzionale - ma non mancano riferimenti a Pudovkin, Otto Dix, Georg Grosz - "Il giglio delle tenebre" ("Die Liebe del Jeanne Ney") è un film che conferma le notevoli capacità di Pabst nell'analisi della complessità della psicologia umana.

This is an interesting documentary about Stalin, his rise to power, and the invasion of the USSR by Germany in WWII. It's split into two parts, the first a general overview of the early history. The second part is the details of WWII and after. David Reynolds does an excellent job of explaining what happened with snippets from diaries, letters and other contemporaneous accounts. Well-assembled historical work.
