Attraverso le testimonianze dello scrittore Umberto Eco e del regista Jean-Jacques Annaud, si raccontano i due processi creativi che hanno portato alla nascita del libro e del film «Il nome della rosa». Si documentano così le varie fasi della realizzazione della pellicola: il lavoro di sceneggiatura e di preparazione, la pre-produzione, il lavoro dello scenografo e del direttore della fotografia e quello del set; le interviste ai protagonisti (Sean Connery, Christian Slater, Murray Abraham, etc…), ai grandi collaboratori del regista, allo scenografo Dante Ferretti, al direttore della fotografia Tonino Delli Colli, oltre naturalmente al regista Jean-Jacques Annaud, che con Umberto Eco rappresenta la vera guida di tutto il film.
