La commedia è ambientata nel 1940 nello studio del capitano Giovanni Bevilacqua (Gilberto Govi), un piccolo armatore genovese di 55 anni, scapolo, onesto, schietto e leale, un galantuomo che si è fatto da solo; è anche Sindaco della Provveditoria Ligure. Si tratta di uno dei personaggi di maggiore spessore umano interpretati da Govi. La ripresa televisiva a cura di Vittorio Brignole avvenne il 14 marzo 1958.
