Due to a female passenger falling out of her top whilst running for the bus Stan is distracted and crashes the bus resulting in the depot managers car being written off. As a result Stan, Jack and Blakey are fired. Stan and Jack soon get new jobs as a bus crew at a Pontins holiday resort but discover that Blakey has also gotten a job there as the chief security guard.

La storia prende spunto da un fatto di cronaca realmente accaduto in Giappone e narra di alcuni personaggi , tutti imparentati con i componenti di una setta, che dopo avere provocato una carneficina avvelenando gli acquedotti, si tolgono la vita in un suicidio di massa. I protagonisti si ritrovano come ogni anno in occasione dell'anniversario sulle sponde di un piccolo lago dove le ceneri dei loro cari sono state disperse. Per un inconveniente banale quella che doveva essere una semplice scampagnata si trasforma in una giornata e una notte di profonde riflessioni e di verità scoperte, anche grazie alla presenza di uno degli apparteneneti alla setta, all'ultimo minuto scampato per sua scelta alla morte.

Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai) diventa recluta nell'esercito imperiale giapponese, in seguito alla chiamata di leva (con cui si concludeva Nessun amore è più grande, primo capitolo della trilogia "La condizione umana"). Continua la sua lotta umanitaria contro i soprusi e le ingiustizie del sistema militare, sia da parte degli ufficiali, sia tra veterani e reclute, in particolare quando il debole e pavido soldato Obara Nitôhei (Kunie Tanaka) viene preso di mira e umiliato per essere crollato durante una spedizione, tanto da indurlo al suicidio. Un giorno si presenta al campo Michiko (Michiyo Aratama), moglie di Kaji, e viene dato loro il permesso di passare una notte insieme in un magazzino. Kaji, che è stimato per il suo coraggio nonostante le idee da comunista, viene nominato caporale, anche per cercare di piegarlo più facilmente agli ideali bellici e patriottici, fino al momento della battaglia al fronte contro i russi.
