Novembre 1870: Amedeo d’Aosta, fratello del futuro Umberto I e capostipite dei Savoia, diventa re di Spagna. Giunto a Madrid il 2 gennaio 1871, lo stesso giorno giura sulla costituzione. Il sovrano è armato di idee liberali e progressiste, ma presto i suoi ideali si scontrano con la realtà spagnola del periodo, dominata da intrighi e corruzione. Costretto a passare la maggior parte del tempo tra le mura del palazzo per timore di un attentato alla sua persona, dopo appena due anni Amedeo abdica, dichiarando la Spagna ingovernabile.

A candle falls off the tree and starts a fire. The toys try in vain to fight the fire; the boy hooks up a hose to a set of bagpipes and takes care of it.
