Giovanna Bruno è il console italiano a Cape Town in Sudafrica. Prossima al ritorno in Italia, l'energica e distinta signora, sopravvissuta ad un tumore che l'ha spinta a riconsiderare tutta la sua vita, deve fare i conti con un ultimo difficile caso, la sparizione di un reporter italiano, Marco Borghi, a cui è stata legata per qualche tempo. Ignorando il fatto che Giovanna e Marco avessero avuto una relazione, terminata per volontà della donna nel momento della scoperta della malattia, la fidanzata dell'uomo, Palesa (Lira Molapo), implora il diplomatico di darle una mano nella ricerca del compagno.
