L'ingegnere di Millwood City Scott Daniels, trasferitosi da Houston, indaga su una serie di misteriosi incendi. L'unico figlio di Scott e Lourie Harper, Jesse, che odiava il trasloco o la casa della giovinezza di papà, finge di avere la febbre e invita la sua nuova ragazza Carmen. La giornalista Allison Saunders, l'ex liceale di Scott, trova Jesse privo di sensi, sopraffatto dai fumi. Le fogne sono piene di topi morti. Le crepe compaiono in vari edifici.
